Jean Dunand（ジャン・デュナン）は、二人の人物の出会いによって2003年に誕生しました。
その二人とは、著名な時計ブランドのためにコンプリケーション・ムーブメントの開発と製造を手がける、スイスきっての時計職人クリストフ・クラーレと、ビジネスパートナーのティエリー・ウルヴェイです。
彼らの目標は、新ブランドの乱立が目立つ中で、「ピエース・ユニーク」、すなわち1点ずつカスタムメイドする方式を基本にして、各モデルが現代の時計技術の頂点を極めるような、前代未聞の先進的な機械式時計を創作することでした。
この二人はまた、スイス生まれの芸術家ジャン・デュナン（1877 – 1942）の作品の愛好者という点でも一致していました。彼に対する関心や賞賛は、この芸術家への尊敬の念を時計の形で表現することへと二人を駆り立てました。
